U.S. Secretary of Education Arne Duncan announced 314 schools as 2009 National Blue Ribbon Schools. Secretary Duncan was joined by Maryland State Superintendent Dr. Nancy S. Grasmick, Montgomery County Board of Education President Shirley Brandman, and Montgomery County Public Schools Superintendent Dr. Jerry Weast for the announcement this morning at Highland Elementary School, a 2009 Blue Ribbon School in Silver Spring, Md.The schools – 264 public and 50 private – will be honored at an awards ceremony on November 3 at the Omni Shoreham Hotel in Washington, DC. For the past 27 years, more than 6,150 of America’s schools have received this coveted award.
Due to the recent issues with flu outbreaks in Iowa, Central Springs is encouraging some simple illness prevention strategies for the upcoming school year. All of the following recommendations are from the Iowa Department of Public Health. You can view their website at www.idph.state.ia.us.
All students and staff are encouraged to:
**Wash their hands frequently with soap and warm water or alcohol based hand sanitizer. Hand sanitizer will be available in every classroom.
**Cover your nose and mouth with a tissue when you cough or sneeze then throw the tissue in the trash after use.
**Avoid touching your eyes, mouth or nose
**Stay home if you get sick
Signs and symptoms of the flu are fever over 100 F, cough, sore throat, runny nose, body aches, chills and fatigue.
